Tunequest Topic: star trek
I spent a good seven+plus hours burning through some iTunes today to make up for yesterday's somewhat disappointing performance a shortened day at the office will do that. With about 100 songs to choose from, I had a very hard time narrowing down the song of the day, so lucky you, here's three songs to choose from. Choose wisely.

More Star Trek remastered screen shots
October 12th, 2006
I've posted another set of contrast and compare shots for the new "Enhanced" Star Trek episodes, bringing the total to three:
Balance of Terror
The Devil in the Dark
The Naked Time
I don't plan on doing any more, as these sets should give a good indication of what the producers are doing to remaster the show's visual effects.
Until The Doomsday Machine airs, then all bets are off.

Star Trek Refit: Balance of Terror Side-by-Side comparisons
September 25th, 2006
I know I know. It's a bit off topic for the tunequest, but I couldn't help myself. Here's a bunch of the new "enhanced" Star Trek footage of the new revised special effects from Balance of Terror for folks who are having trouble locating a station that's showing the new episodes. Enjoy.
Myself, i'm refusing to pass judgement on them.
Insurrection = beautiful music
September 4th, 2006
Jerry Goldsmith's music for Star Trek: Insurrection is genuinely some of the most beautiful (and powerful) music i've ever heard in my entire life, particularly the thematic elements running throughout New Sight.
It certainly is among the top contender for my favorite film scores of all time.
James Horner - Enemy at the Gates: Hacktackular
June 1st, 2006
James Horner is a hack.
That's my opinion. Some people think he's a good or even great composer. I don't. I happen think he has precisely 1.5 Good scores to his credit, namely Star Trek 2 and 3. Those two score, I also happen to think, are among the finest score of the late 20th century, with an asterisk. (the asterisk being that the highlights of each are highly derivative ...
tunequest week in review
May 21st, 2006
for the week ending may 20, 2006. stats: a superlative week here at tunequest. 394 songs played over 25 hours and 40 minutes. a further 5 songs were removed from the library for a net progress of 399, a new record. frankly, i'm surprised by the results. an afternoon braves game and a couple of extented meetings cut into my normal office listening time and i didn't ...
Louis and Bebe Barron - Forbidden Planet: Retro Space Tripping
May 18th, 2006
So I recently listened to Louis and Bebe Barron's avant garde and experimental score to the 1956 sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet. This soundtrack was one of the handful of Records That Time Forgot columns that I wrote in a previous life. I reprint it here for your reading enjoyment.
In 1956, science fiction as we know it scarcely existed as a genre. Adventures in space were mostly centered around action ...
Dennis McCarthy - Deep Space Nine: Emissary: An Unexpected Treat
May 10th, 2006
In the pantheon of composers who have worked on Star Trek, none are more prolific than Dennis McCarthy, who has been working with the franchise since the debut episode of The Next Generation to the final episode of Enterprise. Of course, whether you think that's a good thing or bad depends on your opinion of his music.
With the rather large caveat that Mr. McCarthy's composing abilities were limited by ...
First Contact Complete: Jerry Goldsmith is da man
May 8th, 2006
I'm continuing the tunequest at work, listening to the bonus tracks portion of the Star Trek First Contact score by the ever-illustrious Jerry Goldsmith, whose talents and I don't really need to say this are legendary. I found this bootleg online about 3 years ago, around the same time a lot of other of his Star Trek "complete scores" bootlegs were making some rounds on the internet.
At just ...
